(Feb 20) X-Country Ski with GLS at Mayflower Gulch, Summit County

posted Feb 10, 2010 5:44 PM by Brian Duchinsky

¡Hola, Summit County Backcountry Skiers!

You are cordially invited to join the Gay and Lesbian Sierrans (GLS) for an awesome day of x-country/backcountry skiing on Saturday, Feb 20.

Grab your skis and join GLS for this cross country outing to Mayflower Gulch, a perennial favorite in Summit County. We’ll begin on a forested trail that opens onto the wide-open, snowy fields of the gulch, where we will encounter remnants of the old Boston Mine, and spectacular views of the peaks of the Tenmile Range. The trailhead is located about 6 miles south of Copper Mountain Resort on Highway 91. Roundtrip trail distance will be about 6 miles with an elevation gain of less than 1000 feet, starting at 10,996 ft. Although the trail itself is fairly easy, plan on a moderate difficulty excursion due to the elevation. Bring lunch, snacks, water, sun protection, and appropriate clothing layers and gear. Skins for your skis are definitely recommended, although more experienced skiers may not find them necessary. Plan on a full day if you're coming from outside Summit County, especially as traffic and weather conditions are notoriously unpredictable. Group limited to 10 participants.

For images of last year’s Mayflower Gulch cross country ski outing, visit: http://web.me.com/jfk61/Site/MAYFLOWER_GULCH.html

To sign up or get more information contact John Krotchko at 541-968-2994 or jkjfk@earthlink.net

You do not need to be a member of GLS or the Sierra Club to participate.

GLS is an activity section of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Sierra Club (1 of 7 GLBT sections, and the only one outside of California).  For more info, visit http://www.rmc.sierraclub.org/gls/

Happy trails!

(Feb 14) Snowshoe/hike with GLS at Caribou Ranch, Nederland

posted Feb 10, 2010 5:31 PM by Brian Duchinsky

For those of you who aren't snowriding this Valentine's Day with Paul Brown at Loveland Basin (umm, and why not?), you are cordially invited to join the Gay and Lesbian Sierrans (GLS) for an day of snowshoeing/snowhiking on Sunday, Feb 14.

This will be an easy to moderate snowshoe or snowhike. We plan to go to historic Caribou Ranch, near Nederland, for an easy paced 4.7 mile hike. There is negligible elevation gain, perhaps three hundred feet from the starting elevation of 8,600 feet. The trail is packed snow with some small portions of bare ground or ice. So either snow shoes or yak trax is appropriate footwear. The locale is in a beautiful setting and you will see open meadows and old mining sites. This outing will be half day and is good for beginners and people who want to enjoy a nice, social trip. Please bring outer layers (it can get windy), sun protection, water, and food for lunch.

Contact Phil at bringyour4k@msn.com to sign up.

Look for two red helmets; one white and one blue ski jacket.  Folks can snowride together based on skill, terrain, aggressiveness, conditions, etc.

12:30 pm>  Group lunch at the Eagle's Nest restaurant.  This is the official VGSW Saturday lunch spot, with a free, special live performance by the DJ who will be performing at the monster VGSW dance party Saturday night.  You can also meet Sirius Satellite's Derek Hartley from the Derek & Romaine show.  Your VGSW credentials get you 10% off your lunch bill.

A-Basin Party Saturday (May 16)

Saturday A-basin party! I will be there by 7:30 or 8 AM to get a spot. However,
since I am coming alone and to they are reserving some beach spots. I can’t
guarantee a beach spot. However, I will be in the lower lot. I will be in a
blue trail blazer with Florida tags and a ski rack. You can drive into the lot
and drop your stuff off at my car if you want, and then go park. I will bring
what I can, but I am sure we will need more booze, and bring something to
grill…by the way, I need a grill. Let me know if you are coming and have one,
but I should have one by Friday. Also, bring your chairs.

Let me know if you can come, how many people you are bringing and what time you
plan to arrive. That will give me a general idea of when I need to be at the
car. If some of you are willing to meet me there early, I’ll have more
motivation to get there earlier for a better spot. I have 3 other cars coming
from Denver if you wanna car pool let me know, and I will put you in touch with
my friends. There is no cell phone service up there, but will have one of those
Motorola 2 way radios tuned to channel 4 20. So if you have one, you can call
me when you get there to make sure I am at the truck to drop off your stuff.

If all else fails. I will go to the upper deck of the restaurant at the bottom
and be as close as I can get to the corner nearest the lift, at 10 and 11:30.
Any questions before, just call or text me at 954 415 5152.
